The LEAY / HOWARD / BURNETT / WILSON connection

The HOWARD branch is linked to my ALDRIDGE clan via Mary HOWARD, born in 1841, who became Mrs BURNETT, then Mrs WILSON after the death of her first husband James BURNETT.

She was the mother of Elizabeth BURNETT (who became Mrs ALDRIDGE) and is therefore the grandmother of my grandmother, Annie Leay PLIMMER (previously NUGENT, nee ALDRIDGE).

Mary's father was John Davies HOWARD and her mother was Johanna HOWARD (nee STANTON) who was born in France, a British Subject (as per 1851 census).

I do not know how to trace the birth of her mother, Johanna, so any advice most welcome.

It is here we find the first reference to the LEAY name (not Leah) as in the middle name of my grandmother Annie Leay PLIMMER.

I am sad to announce the passing of my Aunty Beryl (24th September 1934 - 22nd May 2010) after a long illness.

She taught me the joys of the card game "UNO" and I still play it with friends on our social evenings.

She cooked some fabulous meals for my father and I on many visits and I always remember as a child, the delicious thick bread and real butter I was given, whilst visiting my Gran who was staying with her and my Uncle Len, when my Gran had cancer.

Wish we had had more chance to chat, like we did when the "men" were doing the gardening, well that's what they told us. LOL!

Searched the census for my gran, Annie Leay ALDRIDGE but the only one that matches appears to be a in a different family.

I have searched for her parents William John and Elizabeth ALDRIDGE but again they appear to have different children than the previous census entries.

I am very confused about the whole thing and may only know the true answer if I view the original census page. As this is quite expensive then I will not be able to do this for sometime!

She died a widow in 1945, aged 88, in Toxteth Park, Liverpool; her daughter A(da). DUGDALE was present at the time.

She was widowed in 1938.

I know very little about her life, as Mrs GARRAWAY.

In 1922 on 04th Feb, at 52 Woodruff Street, Toxteth Park her step-father died aged 87. She is listed as a daughter of the same address.

In the 1911 census at 52 Woodruff Street, Toxteth Park, her husband is listed as W. GARRAWAY, head of the household and she is listed as Anne, aged 52. Her step-father W. KNOX is listed as the father-in-law and her children are listed as: R. ALDRIDGE, S. ALDRIDGE (step-sons) and L. ALDRIDGE (step-daughter).

In 1901 she is at 52 Woodruff Street, Toxteth Park with her husband William Henry GARRAWAY and two children from this marriage, Henry Thomas aged 1 and Albert Edward aged 2 months, sadly they both die not long after the census was taken. Listed in the household are her other children from her first marriage, as Aldridge GARRAWAY. She is aged 39, so someone was fibbing! (LOL)

She married William in 1899 at St Matthew's, Toxteth Park, her age is stated as full but his is revealed as 30; I think she had bagged herself a toy-boy and somebody seemed bothered about it. They were both living at 33 Longville Street. Her father is listed as Charles STUBBS, deceased, carpenter.

At the time of the 1891 census (aged 34) she had been recently widowed, as her husband John ALDRIDGE had died a few months before in the previous year, after a tragic accident.
The seven off-spring were: William, Joseph, Robert E, Jane L, Ada, Samuel J and Lily E.

In 1881 (aged 25) I found her living in the cellar of 20 Tamworth Street with her husband, John ALDRIDGE and four off-spring; William, Joseph, Robert E. and Martha J. It is possible that her mother and step-father KNOX are living in the cellar next door, at number 18.

She married in April 1873 at the Parish Church of Liverpool to John ALDRIDGE. They are both resident at Kitchen Street and her father is listed as Charles STUBBS, shipwright. It doesn't state it but I am sure he had died by then. A witness is named as Thomas KNOX.

I have yet to locate her in the 1871 census.

I have her in 1861 at 40 John Street, Toxteth Park aged 5, with her widowed mother Ann STUBBS, aged 29, a mangle woman. I have yet to find the death of her father before this date. She has an older sister, Jane and a younger sister, Martha. It is Martha who appears as Martha KNOX with their mother Ann and step-father William KNOX in 1871.

The marriage of Ann STUBBS to William KNOX in 1863 confirms this:

I now have her birth certificate from 1855.

Her parents married in 1853 and her mother's maiden name appears here as HEALY, not HEALING as it did in the marriage certificate to Ann's step-father, William KNOX.

These certificates inform us that Anne's grandfather Edward HEALING or HEALY was a painter, unsure of what kind, as I have yet to find another reference to him. Her step-grandfather was William KNOX, a shipwright. On her father's first marriage certificate, it reveals her grandfather was Joshua STUBBS, a moulder, slightly different to the occupation of engineer as on the above marriage certificate of 1853.

I have yet to trace the STUBBS family line beyond this point.

(c1856 - 1890)

He died in 1890 at the Royal Southern Hospital, Toxteth Park, Liverpool due to an accidental fall of a sack of flour, which caused injuries to his head and body. He was a carter at the time and was living at 24 Tamworth Street.

In 1881 I found him living in the cellar of 20 Tamworth Street with his wife and four off-spring; he is listed as a carter.

He married Ann STUBBS in April 1873 at the Parish Church of Liverpool. They are both resident at Kitchen Street and his father is listed as Robert ALDRIDGE, carpenter.
I have yet to find John and his ALDRIDGE family in the 1871 census.

In 1861 I did find them in Kitchen Street, his parents are Robert and Fanny ALDRIDGE and there are five children in all; William, Elinor, John, Elizabeth A. and Thomas.
I have to save up for his birth certificate but as soon as I have it, I will post the results.

Elizabeth also died at the hospital on Smithdown Road, Sefton Park, Liverpool aged 78 in 1952 and her daughter Annie Leay PLIMMER was the informant.

NB: In 1911 her step-father William James WILSON died aged 78. Her half-brother James WILSON is the informant.

In 1901 she is with her husband and family at 5 House, 3 Court, Beresford Road, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. They had been married in 1892 at St James, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

Her mother Mary WILSON (prev BURNETT, nee HOWARD) died on 14th Feb 1901 at 3 Court, Beresford Road, no house number is indicated.

In 1891 I find her at 280 Upper Mann Street, Toxteth Park as a domestic servant living with her family, a combination of BURNETT / WILSON.

In 1881 the BURNETT family members are incorrectly transcribed as "Bennet WILSON", at 10 Rankin Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool:

Her own grandmother (Elizabeth BURNETT {nee PEARSON}) and perhaps her name sake, died soon after the 1881 census was taken in that same year.

Her father James BURNETT, carpenter or sometimes as a shipwright, died in 1877 due to an accidental fall into a graving dock. He died at 12 Rankin Street, Toxteth Park and was concussed for 10 hours before he passed over. An inquest was held on 14th December 1877.

It would have been just before Elizabeth's fourth birthday when the accident happened.

She was born on 19th December in 1873 at 4 Court, Blair Street, no house number given.

He died in 1932 aged 58 at the hospital in Smithdown Road, Toxteth Park; he was resident at 8 Rankin Street, Toxteth Park and was described as a Team Owner's Carter.

It All Begins With Annie

My ALDRIDGE link to the past begins with my Gran PLIMMER, Annie Leay (previously NUGENT, nee ALDRIDGE).

I hate to repeat myself but here are some of the facts extracted from my PLIMMER blog.

She was born in 1897 at 8 Rankin Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool to William John ALDRIDGE, a carter and Elizabeth ALDRIDGE (nee BURNETT)

In 1901 I find her with her parents and older siblings, Florence and William at 5 House, 3 Court, Beresford Road, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

In 1920 she was married at St Cleopas, Liverpool to Thomas William NUGENT, able seaman; witnesses: Francis RICE and Elizabeth Jane McCALLAGN. Both Annie and Thomas where resident at the address of Annie's birth.

She had her first child, a son, named William Thomas NUGENT in 1922 (died 2009) and a long while after came the second child, another son, in 1927.

Stanley Reginald NUGENT was born in 1928 (died about 1997) and then came the sisters, one born in 1931 and another registered in March qua 1933.

Sadly for my Gran her husband died aged 35 and the death was registered in the March qua 1933 also. I wonder how did she cope on her own at that time with such young children.

In 1938 she married Harold Edward PLIMMER at Christ Church, Norris Green, Liverpool; witnesses: Stanley BAKER and Florence Adelaide BAKER. He is listed as a labourer and was living in Faresham Road, Norris Green, Liverpool. My Gran was living in Kingsland Crescent, Norris Green, Liverpool.

My father followed soon after!

I arrived in 1973 and have some happy if too few memories of her.

She died in 1979 aged 81 from breast cancer.

Facts about her siblings are very vague at the moment and I am in the process of researching them, so any help out there would be most welcome.

Florence Adelaide ALDRIDGE, I have as being born in Dec qua 1894. Her marriage to Stanley BAKER I have as 1914 at St Matthew's, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. I am unaware of her death details at this time.

Willliam ALDRIDGE, I have no information at all except born either 1895 or 1896, when money allows I will send off for a birth certificate.

A younger sister, Mary (Elizabeth) ALDRIDGE was given a birth-date of 03rd November 1906 and I did find a (GRO) ref. in Dec qua 1906. Her marriage puzzles me though, I was told she married a Patrick (Paddy) MILLER but my search so far has only found a marriage to a Hercules MILLER in 1934 at St Cleopas, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

There are nine years between my Gran's birth and her sister Mary's birth. I have discovered there were many more that didn't survive much beyond toddler years.
